Background of the Study
Workplace safety for nurses is a critical component of healthcare delivery, directly impacting the quality of care and nurses' well-being. Nurses face various occupational hazards, including exposure to infectious diseases, physical injuries, and workplace violence (International Labour Organization [ILO], 2023). Ensuring their safety requires robust policies, adequate training, and the provision of protective resources.
At State Specialist Hospital, Kano, hospital management plays a pivotal role in creating a safe working environment for nurses. This includes implementing safety policies, ensuring compliance with standard procedures, and addressing occupational hazards proactively. Despite these efforts, safety challenges persist due to resource limitations, inadequate training, and systemic issues (Abubakar et al., 2024).
This study evaluates the role of hospital management in ensuring nurses’ workplace safety, highlighting successes and areas requiring improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, face significant workplace safety challenges, including inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), insufficient training on hazard management, and poor enforcement of safety policies. These issues increase the risk of occupational injuries and illnesses, compromising both nurse and patient outcomes.
While hospital management is responsible for ensuring workplace safety, there is limited research on the effectiveness of their interventions. Understanding management’s role is essential for addressing these challenges and promoting a culture of safety.
